CANNOT OPEN FILE

I recently backed up my audacity sound files to a portable HDD. I since then formatted the system the recording was made on. Now, whenever I try and open the audacity file on HDD, I cannot. I get an error message about source or something. What is going on? How can I open the file? Audacity files seem to stop working if they get moved.

What did you backup?

Audacity project consists of
1. projectname.aup file
2. projectname_data directory
3. external ("imported") files.

.aup files is a small files that refers to sounds contained in _data.
If you used "import" with default settings, the sound was not copied but .aup refers to your .wav files.
