Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Failed Installation

Post by DeLtAIjK » Tue Aug 12, 2008 8:33 am

I use a Dell with Windows XP Pro SP3 (just upgraded from Vista), dual core 2.2gHz, 4GB RAM, and I wanted to reinstall Audacity.

Upon double clicking the audacity installation file, I get the error message, "Access violation at address 004097A6. Write of address 00401000." This problem persists even when I tried the new beta version install, leading me to believe that it's something that's not properly configured in my system. I have checked my audio devices, and they are working normally. I tried googling this error message and checking documentation on this at the audacity forums and FAQ, but I cannot find a fix for this problem.

This is my desktop, and on my laptop with XP Pro SP2, it installed (about 3 months ago) properly. When I had Vista on my desktop, it also installed properly. I'm hoping that someone would have knowledge of how to disable some property of SP3 to allow me to install Audacity. Thanks a bunch for your attention!

No guarantee - but I would try removing your Audacity configuration file.

You should find the file in C:Documents and Folders<your_user_name>Application DataAudacityaudacity.cfg

Try deleting this file and then re-installing Audacity - or perhaps even try deleting the file and just restarting Audacity.

Just note that this will reset all your preferences to their default value - so you will probably need to reset Audacity to record in Stereo.

Note: The .cfg file is only used for Audacity 1.3. In 1.2, the Windows Registry is used for Audacity settings. The settings are only created once Audacity has launched and made a clean exit.

Reason: Only 1.3 uses .cfg

I actually don't have Audacity even installed.

I think I may have found the problem. I was logged in as "Administrator" in my new XP. I tried installing Zoomplayer - it worked out fine, but some of the codecs did not. They displayed the same error message, but they included another popup - it asked me to check that I have complete permissions on this user account.

I was quite confused, so I checked my User Accounts and created a new one. I could only chose for it to be an "Administrator" because I could not have a limited account until I made an Administrator account. So! Right now, I'm about to reinstall Audacity, and see if this works. If it does, I feel dumb, but at least this forum post will be out there for users that have trouble with installing certain programs while using the original Administrator account.

I will let y'all know if this works in a few. Thanks for the really quick reply, though!

P.S. Yes, it did work. >_<; d'oh! Thank you, again! :D

Good to know that you got it working - and how you got it working. And good too that you were able to publicly share your embarrassment for the benefit of others ....
