Audacity crashes with nary a peep on startup. I've carefully gone through the Wiki on running on Vista. My devices are good and accessible, the drivers are all up to date, etc. I tried re-installing, just to be sure. I've tried running both in and out of compatibility mode (using XP SP2 when I tried it). This is a machine that started virgin with Vista, so it's not an upgrade issue.
Is there at least some setting that will allow me to get a clue as to what is failing? If not, is 1.3.5 Beta more chatty and better at trapping the fault and telling what's wrong?

Re: Audacity 1.2.6 crashes on startup on Vista Ultimate
There's not many regular forum posters that use Vista, so the wiki is really THE resource.
I don't think 1.3.5 will be more chatty, but it would certainly be worth trying - 1.2.6 is very old now.

I'm sorry - I thought I mentioned in the second sentence of the post that I'd tried all the stuff in the Wiki. My mistake.waxcylinder wrote:Try this page from teh Wiki: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... s_Vista_OS

I installed 1.3.5 Beta, and it worked right out of the box.

No harm in posting a link to THE page (just in case you missed that particular one - I don't thing the wiki is terribly well structured yet and it's easy to miss the bits that you need).JohnWJames5 wrote:I'm sorry - I thought I mentioned in the second sentence of the post that I'd tried all the stuff in the Wiki.

Keep an eye on the main Audacity web site, the new stable release (v.1.4.0) is due out fairly soon.
While you are using the beta version, it's as well to be aware of the known issues:
http://www.audacityteam.org/wiki/index. ... own_Issues
Note that these issues do not affect all users, so it may be worth checking out which issues affect your set-up so that you can work round them if necessary.
One issue that is not in the list, but has been reported by a few users (including myself) is when using effects: Selecting "Preview" of an effect and then selecting "Cancel" causes Audacity to lock up. The workaround is - whenever I use preview, I must remember not to cancel it. If I decide that I don't want to use it, then I must apply it, then use "Undo".
Cheers
Steve
