Mono setting crashes!

Post by polkat » Fri May 20, 2011 9:06 pm

I am using Audacity 1.3.12 beta. It has worked fine but recently I had a virus and had to wipe the hard disk and start over. Audacity still works fine, but if I go into preferences and set it for mono (1 channel) recording, the computer crashes if I try to record! It works fine when set to stereo (2 channel). I don't remember this happening before, so maybe I have a setting wrong. Any ideas? Thanks!

Did you reinstall the drivers for the computer sound device?

If you need help, please say which version of Windows you are on (for example, Windows XP).

Windows XP Home. Sure I installed the sound drivers. Wouldn't work without them. As I said, works fine when recording stereo, but if I set it to mono (in preferences) the whole computer crashes as soon as I hit Record. I can split recorded stereo tracks to mono and that works fine, just cannot record in mono.

Then you presumably have some other conflict involving the sound device and the kernel or the sound device and some other driver which is not installed as it used to be.

Look at the memory dump. If you are not sure where it is, right-click over My Computer > Properties. which should bring you to "System Properties". Click the "Advanced" tab, and then click "Settings" under "Startup and Recover".

You can analyse the memory dump fairly easily by downloading WhoCrashed. Before using WhoCrashed, you’ll have to make sure that Microsoft Debugging Tools for Windows has been installed. The first time you click the Analyze button to look at the dump, WhoCrashed will ask you to select the path to the Microsoft Debugging Tools for Windows (usually in C:Program FilesDebugging Tools for Windows). If you don't have the tools then you can download the required installer by clicking “Download the required file from Microsoft site now”.

As another alternative (if you have not already done so), upgrade to XP Service Pack 3.
