input level from cassestte deck causing distortion

I am trying to record from cassette deck to Audacity. I am going 'line out' from the deck to the 'mic' input on laptop. The levels are too high and I can't adjust them down. There is distortion. Also it seems like it might be restricted to mono? The main thing right now though is the distortion.

That's the problem. You need to connect to a line input. If you don't have one, you'll need to get a USB line level interface such as the Behringer UCA-202.

That connection on your machine was designed to do this...

Thanks for that Bill. I will try to get one of those from eBay.
