Re: no sound
Which Audacity version do you have (check in Help menu -> About)? Which windows version? How do you connect the turntable to the computer? Is it an usb turntable?
Include as much details as you can in your post (Audacity version, Operating System, Equipment used, etc).
Please post your question in the appropriate forum (regarding audacity version and operating system).

Re: no sound
The versions of Audacity is 1.2.6 and I connected the turntable via a jack. Any help welcome.
Re: no sound
If you're on Windows 7 or Vista you should upgrade to 1.3.13.
Audacity 1.2.6 is old and no longer maintained. Audacity 1.3.13 despite being labelled as beta is very close to the next 2.0 release is quite stable already. The old 1.2.6 doesn't work well on Vista or 7.
If you're on XP or older 1.2.6 will work fine, but you'll be missing some nice features. You can have both version installed but only use one at a time.
You can open 1.2.6 projects in 1.3.13, but not the other way.
If you're using a jack you're probably connecting to the line-in (blue socket on most desktop computers). Make sure you've selected line-in as the recording device in Preferences -> Devices.
