Splicing into an existing track

Hi ,
I have a recording of a talk i did a few years back and i wish to edit some page numbers mentioned on the cd that have changed.

The original recording was recorded by a different recording device that i now have will this make a difference?
i know i need to record the words of the new pages and convert to WAV format but then what?
Do i import into audacity and audacity will be opened in two windows then cut from one window to another? is this how it will work or is there a better way?

what if i need to adjust recording levels for the inported piece?

You have not said what format your old recording is, but you will need it in a format that is supported by Audacity, such as WAV.

I recommend using Audacity 1.3.x rather than 1.2.6

With Audacity 1.3.5
Import the old file into Audacity and find the bits that you want to change - Select each bit and press CTRL+B to insert a label - you may enter text for each label to make them easier to find later.
Now mute the old audio track and record the new bits on a new track.
Split each phrase (for example "page number 32") into a separate clip, and use the "Time Shift" tool to drag to the appropriate place.
Use the volume slider on the new track to adjust the level to match the old track.
Use the "Envelope tool" to silence the parts of the original track that are being replaced.
