Playback at double speed

Been using audacity for several years now and very happy with it.

But quite suddenly, after recording something through the sound card, it has started playing back at double speed.

Not aware that I have tinkered with the settings. Have poked about in all the various settings and can't find one to regulate playback speed. Nothing in the tutorila about this.

Any suggestions as to what I have done wrong or how to correct it?

Exactly double speed?

Is this happening all the time?
How exactly are you recording and what equipment/software are you using?

There are Effects called Change Speed, Change Tempo, etc, but that's not what you have. Sound is recorded using a specific set of technical standards like 16-bit, 44100, Stereo, WAV. That's the one that Music CDs use. If Audacity is fooled into thinking the music was recorded with the wrong specifications, it would have the effect of speeding up or slowing down the show.

A very common problem in Audacity is somebody tries to play a highly compressed, ultra-modern, internet download sound clip. If Audacity doesn't understand it, the clip would be played as if the advanced technology didn't exist leading to a 10 minute clip blasting/screeching by in 30 seconds.

That's why you need to tell us everything possible about what you're doing. Where, exactly, is the sound coming from?
