Sample rate help!

I am going blind trying to find the info I need.
What I need is hopefully a simple answer of some sort.
I am trying to post some songs on the website Reverbnation which requires mp3's to be at a 44100 rate. I use Cool Edit Pro and all my files are at 48000. So I used Audacity to set the sample rates on the tracks to 44100 and now they play slow and sound horrible.
If anyone can tell me what I am doing wrong and how to fix it I would REALLY appreciate it.
my friends have tried to help but all they have done is give me headaches with trying to explain things.
I am not very good with computers but can figure things out if given very specific, simple instructions.
Thank you SO much!

You can set the show sample rate to 44100 with the little window on the lower left.

Yes,I know and thank you.
What I am saying is that I tried to re-sample/re-size,etc my 48000 files to 41000 and when I did it made the files play back slow and sound really bad.
So I am trying to find out if this is something that can be fixed or if I am just down the drain with the recordings I have done at 48000.
I need them to be 41000 for the site I have to put them on.
Thanks!

Yes it can be fixed - by the method described by Koz.

1) Open Audacity.
2) Import the track into Audacity.
3) Set the "Project Rate" (lower left corner of the main Audacity window) to 44100
4) Export as WAV.
