Problem with Recording Cassette with Hi Levels

Post by setchell » Thu Apr 28, 2011 12:57 am

I trying to record a cassette that was a homemade recording of a choir. When I playback through the computer speakers the sound is fine. When I start the recording in Audacity there is immediate distortion, like a crackling noise. I've tried pre recorded music tapes and i do not have the same problem. I've tried lowering the mixer volume and the problem still exists.

I have a cassette player plugged into a soundblaster x-fi card line in. I tried with the creative audio console and I get the same issue.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this issue?

Thanks

Sounds like you have feedback on your signal.

Have a read of this set of tutorials from the 1.3 manual: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Tuto ... iscs_to_CD

You don't say what version of Audacity you are using. If you are on any 1.2 version do yourself a favour and down the latest Beta 1.3.13. Don't worry about the Beta labelling, it's now a very mature Beta - and certainly works better an most modern machines that the now-ancient 1.2 series. You can get 1.3 from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/
