Manually Recovering (corrupted?) Projects

I have not done a lot of looking on this website so I apologize if I am posting a popular topic but I feel if I can describe this in my own words then it will be easier for me to get my point across.
I have been recording audio for audacity and about 25% of the time when I hit the stop button it says "audacity has stopped working" and it makes me close the program.. When I re-open Audacity it tells me that I can manually recover my recent project. I learned how to do this but when I do it opened the project up 1869 little clips appeared (I recorded for three hours and it is very important that I get my data) all aligned vertically. When this happened with a smaller project I was able to copy and paste, which I spent forty minutes doing, and then export it as a wmv file or whatever and it worked. The problem was that there were 303 little clips but only about 240 were there..
My questions are as follows -
1. Is there an easier way to recover my lost data and can I get all of it back when I do?
2. Is there an easier way for me to align all of the little pieces of the project into one whole project (the way it was while I was recording)
Any information about why this is happening to me an how it can be fixed is greatly appreciated :D

I use Windows Vista and am actually not sure about which version of audacity I am using but I am fairly certain it is 1.2
-Thanks again,
The Goobanator

Audacity 1.2 is ancient and not recommended for Vista.
You can get Audacity 1.3.13 from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/
I would recommend that you also install "Lame" and "FFMpeg"
http://audacityteam.org/help/faq?s=install&i=lame-mp3

There's quite a lot of general information about resolving Vista problems here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Windows_Vista_OS
