'Error while opening sound device.'

Okay, so this is my first time posting here and first time having trouble with Audacity.

Recently, I decided to start recording my singing with the webcam microphone on my mini netbook - the OS is Windows 7.
However, whenever I record while my headphones are plugged into the headphone jack, I get the following error when trying to play back my recording - ''Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate.'
The recording becomes distorted - Small parts of it are sped up or out of tempo.

I've searched for two days trying to find how to fix it on these forums and elsewhere, but nothing seems to work.
I've tried setting the Project Rate to 44100 and 48000. Nada.
The Playback Device was set to Speakers (Realtek High Definition), the Recording Device to Microphone (Realtek High Definition) and the channels to 2 or 1. None of this has helped.
I record perfectly fine when the headphones are not plugged in, but they're essential to the way I record.

I have absolutely no idea what to do to fix this. It has become very frustrating!

Are you really using Audacity 1.2.6?
How do the webcam microphone and your headphones connect to the computer?

i am also facing the same problems. I think this problem is due to low standard devices. I am using a good company device but it also doing the same. What can be the problem?

The problem is usually that the computer sound system is not configured correctly.
