I'm at a complete loss since I've had no trouble in the past. Whether I'm playing a song on my computer or listening over the internet, the sound is fine coming through my speakers but Audacity isn't "hearing" anything. I haven't changed any settings except in trying to resolve this. I've even tried another recording software that I've used in the past and it doesn't hear anything either. Does anyone have any idea what to look at for this problem.

A little history/recent history... A few days ago I clicked on a link on the internet and picked up a virus. I've removed that, but had to re-install Windows to do it. I've been using computers since 1986, including running a dial-up BBS from 1990-2000, and using Windows since v3.1 so I know what I'm doing but I'm still completely stumped by this. Help?

Check that your sound source is connected correctly (microphone, cassette player....)
Check that your audio drivers are installed correctly (Device Manager)
Check that the appropriate recording input is enabled in the Windows Mixer (loudspeaker icon near the clock).

Thanks. I found the problem and it's fixed. Like I said, I know what I'm doing... so I did something stupid. After re-installing Windows last week, due to a virus, I did what I usually do, I went to Control Panel and removed all the useless stuff included by the pc maker (demos, mini-versions of programs I don't need, etc.) and in the process accidently removed the software/drivers for my sound 'card' on the motherboard. The speakers still worked thanks to a generic driver Windows used but it was minimal functionality. With the RealTek drivers replaced all is well again.
