unwanted echo effect

My microphone always records with an echo. I have an Alesis mixer with effects on it, but it's effects are only available when not recording. When I hit record, I get the same echo effect every time. I'm using XP. Also, there is a grey (unavailble) input source on the right side, where you should select microphone.

Do you like to record internet Audio like Youtube? You need to turn those settings off in order to make a plain recording. The two Windows Control Panel settings are antithetical to each other.

The best I can do is point you to the settings to achieve recording internet audio and tell you to follow them backwards.

Hi! Thanks for trying to help me. Unfortunatly, I'm still not getting it to work. I can kill the echo effect during record by turning down the output volume on the mixer toolbar, but then I can't hear the music I'm trying to record with. Everything sounds fine as long as I don't hit record. When I do I always get the echo. It seems to kill my mixer's control, and then uses that echo. I think I've tried every combination in control panel / audio controls, but I either lose the audio completely or get a loud buzz. I've been trying to get this thing to work for about a week, and if I don't get it soon, I'm just going to have to download another program, and hope it works. Reply if you can think of anything for me. Thanks!

Which audacity version do you have? You posted in the 1.2.x section of the forum, upgrading to 1.3.12 is recommended in most cases. You can get it from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows

Which alexis mixer model do you have? What's your setup? How do you have it all connected? Which recording device have you selected in Audacity's Preferences -> Devices?
