I'm inclined to agree with Steve's earlier diagnosis, in that I too think you have some dodgy USB services somewhere: cable, plug, sockets whatever. The return of 1.2.6 to sudden proper operation for you would lead us to support that view.
You're not by any chance using a USB ub are you? You shouldn't be.
