AUDACITY RECORDING PROBLEM! (PLEASE HELP)

I'm trying to record a few rough guitar tracks to send to another member of my band. Everything records and plays back fine, however, when I go to record a second track the first one doesn't play. It records fine, for instance, I can record me randomly noodling over the first track and when I play them back they both play. The problem is that whilst recording I can not hear the first track. I'd like to be able to fix this because I need to hear the first track while I'm recording the second. How do I go about solving this issue?
Thanks in advance to all who help

Step one is stop using Audacity 1.2. Audacity 1.3.12 has provisions for overdubbing.
Get Audacity 1.3.12 from here:
http://audacityteam.org/download/
If you use MP3 or other compressed formats, you should get "lame" and "FFMpeg" from the same place. Do not use older versions of those plugins.
You can install both versions, but only use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 projects will not open in 1.2. Audacity 1.3.12 has a limited ability to cancel out some of the production sound delays. Audacity 1.2 doesn't.
Then, after you straighten that out, go into Audacity Preferences and select "Play tracks while recording new ones." Restart Audacity.
There is almost a 100% chance you will not be able to hear yourself properly while you perform the overdub. that's a problem.
