Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

I've been there. Only two options when USB convertor plugged in: USB Audio CODE or SoundMAX HD Audio. Neither result in an audible signal (when volume turned on). G.

It sounds like AUdacity 1.2 may not be able to handle your sound card correctly.
Try upgrading to to Audacity 1.3.12 http://audacityteam.org/download/

Tried that to. Same negative result. It seems I am running out of options. I am puzzled. Why do such compatibility issues arise with a rather common platform as Windows XP professional (2002, Service Pack 3). It is not related to the PC since I tried it on three different types PC's (2 laptops (Hp & Maxdata) and 1 desk top (Dell)) running the same operating sysem. All give the same result. Is there anybody that has been succesful in working with the combination Audacity (whatever version) - Windows XP professional SP3 - USB Audio Convertor (especialy the one of JB Systems)? G.

I recently had the uncomfortable experience of "upgrading" my WinXP box to Service Pack III. It had on-board sound and it hasn't worked since. Windows complains that it can't find my sound card and demands drivers and other software. The support people gave me a stand-alone Blaster-type sound card and this morning I'm going to shut down the on-board services and load the Blaster drivers. I use Audacity 1.3.12 as part of a test suite and, of course, it stopped working immediately.

I don't know what SP3 did, but it caused all sorts of headaches for the service people, so I'm not shocked this is happening. Windows does not have universal support for all sound cards. Even if you do have drivers, sometimes you just can't get there and you need to change hardware. Audacity is a complete slave to Windows, so if Windows is helpless, that's the end of the story.

Progress at last! I got audio by simply setting the plaback selection in control panel audio to the internal sound card (SoundMAX audio HD). The caveat: you have to do that BEFORE you run Audacity! Whatever you do after Audacity is running (preference settings in Audacity - setting of control panel/Audio preferences) it doesn't change the playback output! I hope this is not a kind of IT-intelligence test for would-be Audacity users....
Next challence: my USB converter has an analog output to connect to HIFI equipment. No signal there although I started of with USB audio CODEC as plaback device prior to starting Audacity... Tested Windows XP pro service pack 2: same behavior. G.
