Only input choices are microphone & CD audio

I'm trying to save some archived voice mails from my phone and eventually burn them but I'm unable to find the correct input option. I've read through many forum posts and help topics and the most useful ones mention something along the lines of "stereo input" or "stereo mixer" as a choice in the dropdown box to the right of the Output Volume and Input Volume sliders. My problems is that the only choices in said box are "CD Audio" and 2 "Microphone".

Last night I had hooked a male to male cable from my phone's headset jack to my laptop's microphone jack but the resulting sound was so low and incomprehensible that I am stuck looking for a better solution. Any advice would be much appreciated, especially since I've notice that this is a common topic in the forums and people are probably tired of answering it.

Thanks.

Do you have a cellphone headset? If you look at the plug, I bet it has more than one or two gold rings on there. That plug has to carry headphone, microphone and sometimes control and the connection is much more complicated than just one audio signal. I don't know what the solution is, but that's the problem. Maybe Radio Shack has a connection cable. They're getting into selling cellphones and equipment more and more.

I can check later.

As far as recording "Stereo Mix," yes it's an old question. Some Windows Laptops just don't have the service available and you have to resort to Money-Based software like Total Recorder.
