Amplifying?

Post by vilate » Thu Jul 17, 2008 4:00 am

I'm trying to edit a recording of a phone call. My voice is loud but the other person's is quiet. Is there a way to edit the recording so that both sides of the conversation are equal?

You mean, click here and everything will be OK?

I wish. You can try messing with Effect > Compressor, but the near voice, instead of being loud, will become dense and crowded sounding compared to the far voice.

You can also go in with the magnifier word at a time and increase or decrease the volume with Effect > Amplify. That should only take you weeks.

Recording both sides of a telephone conversation is far more difficult than you would think. Doctor Laura does it with thousands of dollars of electronics and network equipment. It seems like you should be able to do it with those little Radio Shack devices, but all they really do is give you what you already have and keep you from getting shocked from the phone line.

I tell people to put their speakerphone on the middle of the bed in a quiet bedroom and put your recording microphone in the middle between the speakerphone and your live voice. Make a call and go.

I understand there is a software package from, I think, Vonage that will allow you to record both sides of a Vonage phone call without them mixing.

It's also possible to design an adapter for a cellphone to capture both sides without them mixing, but I haven't finished building it yet. I know of nobody making one.
