Can't record... won't recognize sound device

When I try to record in Audacity I get a pop-up that reads "Error while opening sound device". In preferences, I have "Wave (E-mu Edsp Audio Processor" selected as my recording device. I've tried all the sampling rate settings and none work.

My soundcard is an E-Mu 1616. I've set up Patchmix (the e-mu routing program) so it should be routing my mic input to Wave L/R outputs as well as ASIO. It's possible this is not configured properly, but I'm pretty sure it is. I've followed the Audacity instructions and gone into the Control Panel/Sound section (Win 7), but my devices are enabled. Recording works fine in other programs (such as Reaper).

Any suggestions?

Update...

I've managed to get it to work but with a strange new problem. If I set E-mu Patchmix (the sound card router) to 48000khz, Audacity will recognize the sound card and record. But in that case Audacity won't recognize the soundcard if I try to PLAY a file. If I set it to 44100khz (where I'd prefer it be because of settings in other programs), it won't recognize the sound card when recording but it will play files with no problem. It makes no difference whether the sample rate in Audacity is set to 44100 or 48000.

What could be causing this?

Audacity 1.2.6 is not recommended for Windows 7. You should upgrade to Audacity 1.3.12 http://audacityteam.org/download/
If that does not cure the problem, check that the recording and playback sample rates in the Windows Control Panel (Sounds) match the settings in Audacity.
