Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate.

You can start by telling us what your sound device is and what kind of computer you have.

Do you know which version of Windows?

If you look in the Windows Control Panel in the "Sounds" section there should be some indication of what sort of sound card you have.
The important thing is that there is both a recording and a playback device available for Audacity.

See here for some guidance with the Windows Control Panel: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel

It says no audio devices are installed.

Well that explains the Audacity error message.
Assuming that the computer actually does have either a sound card or on-board sound, you will need to install the drivers for the audio device. As this an "off-the-shelf" computer, the drivers should be included on your computer installation disks.

But I've been using Audacity for awhile now, and didn't have a problem.
