The ability to capture sound at distances with the Rode VideoMic is also very pleasing. It could easily pick up voices at moderate volumes from over 20 feet away.
That's the problem. Not the solution. That microphone is designed for shotgun newsgathering use. Not production voice capture. I'm going with 'you can't get there from here.' By the time you get close enough to the microphone to get the presence effect, the microphone distance characteristics are going to kill you.
Were you not in front of the mic when you made the recording? I can't figure out where all the room noise came from, unless you live in a boiler factory and that clip is the microphone doing its job. How big was the room? If you get it to work at all, it's going to be pointed at you with a completely dead wall or soundproofed area behind you. Remember as above -- it's comfortable at 20feet.
I've seen a microphone like that pushed into service in an emergency, but it was on a sound stage, not a living room.
