It's not recording any sound for me. I'm using Windows XP with SigmaTel Audio.

I have tried the settings as Microsoft Sound Mapper Output/Input as well as SigmaTel Audio. I have also tried the Software Playthrough option.

Can't get it to work. Any ideas?

Can you record anything with Windows Sound Recorder?
If not, check the settings in the Windows Mixer (Loudspeaker icon near the clock) - Check both the Record and Playback settings.

No, Windows Sound Recorder doesn't work either. My sound settings look fine.

That looks fine to me.

Open up the Windows control panel and find "Sounds and Audio Devices"
On the "Audio" tab, make sure that the SigmaTel sound card is selected for recording and playback. You can also try ticking the "Use only default device" check box.

With these set, you should be able to get Audacity working with "Microsoft Sound Mapper" selected in "Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O"

What are you trying to record?
Can you record from the microphone or line-in sockets?

Those settings are all already set.

"Microsoft Sound Mapper" was already tested, didn't work.

Still nothing being recorded. At first I tried recording sound from Team Fortress 2, now I'm trying to record anything.

I don't have a mic, and not sure how to do line-in.

To record from Line in, you need to be recording something like an MP3 player, Cassettes player, CD player. or similar. You will need a lead that fits the output (preferably "Line Out" of the thing that you are recording (though it should also work with a headphone out as long as you keep the volume reasonably low). The other end of the lead needs to be a stereo mini-jack to fit the computer socket.

A lead like this should work with a Walkman, and cost under $2.


A lead like this would suit a cassette deck and probably cost about $3.


Of course you would also select "Line In" in the Windows mixer.

Have you had a look in the Device Manager to see if the sound card drivers look OK? (no yellow question mark, and no red cross).

Device Manager is fine (no yellow/red marks).

Kinda looking for a way to record sound without buying something new.

It would be good to test if the sound card works - try asking your friends if they have a lead that you could borrow for an hour.

Software all looks OK, but the fact that you cannot record on anything, not even Windows Sound Recorder, is not good.
