I am using Windows 7 64 bit (Windows 7 Business) and trying to convert some audio cassettes into good sound files. My computer is a laptop -- an HP Pavilion dv7-4040us, with 4 gigs of RAM and a 500 Gig hard drive. To reduce clipping as much as possible I must move the input level slider all the way to the left. In addition, I must move the slider under "Mute Solo", which appears after I press record, also all the way to the left AND the second slider, just underneath, all the way to the right. I still have some clipping, but it's drastically reduced from what it was before I moved the sliders.
All well and good. However, the output .wav file then has no appreciable volume, even when I turn the general computer volume and the Windows Media Player volume all the way to the max.
A separate "problem" (I think) is that when I click for the drop down menu for Audio Track, Left Channel is checked, while all channel selections (including Left Channel) are grayed out.
The main problem here is the first paragraph
Minimize Clipping ==> Whisper Volume on Output

Re: Minimize Clipping ==> Whisper Volume on Output
You can't actually connect a high level stereo sound signal to your Windows laptop if all you have is a red or pink connector labeled Mic-In. Those two are fundamentally incompatible with each other. We usually send people off to buy a UCA202 device. It provides a very nice set of stereo connections across multiple computer types.
