Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Audacity won't open up most highly compressed file types; AAC, MP4, M4A, etc. etc. No matter how you try to open them up, you'll get trash or maybe a squeek in place of the music.

You need to convert the music to something Audacity can understand before they will open.

There's a free program called SUPER by erightsoft that can convert most media file types. If you can convert the files to WAV files that should fix the problem.
