My system is Windows XP. My play back and recording device is "NVIDIA (R) nForce (TM) Audio Codec Interface.

I am trying to record from a cassette player that can only be heard by using a headset. The head phone jack is used to connect to the computer.

I do not honestly know whether it is or is not recording or if I can not hear the recording for some reason.
Is the problem the cassette player?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you can hear the cassette player through the headphones, there's nothing wrong with that.

You should have a cable with a headphone plug (1/4" stereo) to 1/8" stereo to plug into your computer. I hope to goodness you have a deskside PC machine. If you do, plug the cable into the Line-In--usually the bulls-eye symbol with the arrow pointing in.

Launch Audacity and click once inside the red record meters...

...and they will wake up and tell you what the audio level is. You don't have to go into record for this. This is Audacity's diagnostic mode (you don't get the blue waveforms until you do go into record).

Then all you need to do is set the Windows Control Panels correctly and you're good to go.
