Make sure that you are importing a supported format.

Audacity can not "import directly from CD". You must either Record, or Rip a CD.

ive also tried importing files from itunes...which are MP3 files arent they?
at any rate this seems to be a common problem with a few other users reporting the same problem.
i will recheck what format the files are stored as...but does anybody else have any suggestions??

ive just checked the format of songs in my itunes library and they are AAC.
reading the Audacious website it says that this file format is not useable.
could anyone explain to me how to convert the AAC music file into a suitable format??
many thanks

You have two basic options:
1. find and use some converter software to convert your file to a type that Audacity supports
2. play the file in any music software that supports that particular file format and record it in Audacity.
