Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

poor sound

Post by joleyboy » Sat Jan 29, 2011 4:50 pm

I'm using a Behringer UFO202 to connect my turntable to my laptop and record vinyl to CD. Using Windows. I can record and save to the computer and then transfer to CD fine. Using MP3 since WAV won't playback for me. The problem is that the resultant music sounds muffled. Specifically, for example, And I Love Her by the Beatles has a guitar solo midway. The song sounds 'fair' but that guitar solo sounds more like a bassoon. The crisp tone is lost. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your help

Does it sound bad (muffled) when you play it immediately after recording (before you Export it)?

In that case you'll need to say a lot more about your set-up.
Exactly which version of Audacity (look in "Help menu > About Audacity")
What operating system
What settings you have made to select the correct audio device
any other information

It's Audacity 1.2.6
Windows 7
I don't know what you mean by settings to select the correct audio device. I'm pretty sure I have it hooked up correctly and just went with it as is. Didn't change any settings that I know of....didn't know what to do there. On the left it says stereo, 44100Hz, 32 bit float. I guess I did go in and change a couple of things as recommended by a video tutorial from youtube which was basically to select stereo recording as I guess it is set for mono originally. I suppose that's not much help to you. Sorry.
I'm assuming here that the playback should mimic the original recording exactly. Am I expecting too much of this program?
thanks, again

You're expecting too much of Audacity 1.2.6. It was written a very long time ago and it's not recommended for Vista or Windows 7.

You can get Audacity 1.3.12 from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/

I'd recommend that you uninstall Audacity 1.2.6 before installing 1.3.12

If you are really lucky, Audacity 1.3.12 may be able to configure itself automatically, but it depends on how your computer sound system is set up.
IMPORTANT: Ensure that the UFO202 is connected to the computer before you open Audacity.

If it does not work straight away we can help you through the set-up, but do let us know either way ;)

Sorry for the delay here.....snowmaggedon!
I uninstalled the older version and downloaded the newer one and installed that with the USB attached when I opened it. No apparent problems with the program loading or getting going. However, the sound of the guitar solo on that song still sounds real bad....just like it did on the other version of audacity. So, I tried a sampling of a variety of other recordings....piano classics....leo kottke....barbara striesand....on and on. All sounded pretty much as identical reproductions. I did not try to save to CD and replay, but just replayed from audacity. All sounded fine, except that beatles tune. I guess it must be something with that record? It's just that it sounds fine when I play the record but not when recorded on audacity and I really like that number.... I did note that to get a good result you have to keep the input volume level quite low, don't you?
anyway, thanks for your help!!

It may be worth looking in the Windows Control Panel to see if Windows is applying additional gain boost to the input and/or is set to mono (Windows often assumes that any USB audio input is a mono microphone).

Thanks, again, Steve. Let's remember we are dealing with an dope here. I went to the control panel but could not find anything that sounded like what you recommended above. So, I guess I need more detail on how to find out how to change the settings there if it is needed. Sorry, and thanks!

It seemss to me that this whole thing should be much more straightforward. I just spent a couple hours trying to record two songs off vinyl to CD. Sorry, no luck there. This program seems to have a mind of its own. I recorded a couple of numbers and played them back on the stereo system. Suddenly, it won't play back over the stereor system, but only on the computer's simple speakers. I don't think I can check for the quality I want that way. Burned them to CD, won't replay. I had saved as MP3. Last time I did that, they played back fine. Again, all I wanna do is take a song from vinyl and put it on CD. Seems simple to me.....
thanks
