Is the problem with one specific WAV file or do you have the same problem with all WAV files that are more than a few seconds long?
Have you tried importing MP3 files? Do they have the same problem?

the wav are all only 5-7 seconds long...the songs are 4-6 mins long, but dont know if they are in the mp3 form or not..this is all new .this could be the problem on what they are in the music file.i can click on them and they play just fine from the window media player..all i did in beginning was to rip them from cd disk, didnt do anything to them to make them a wav or maybe this mp3 thing..keep up with the hints and help and with others telling me things we may come to what works..thanks..

Do the files play OK for the first few seconds or do they play super fast and garbled?

I would like to continue this thread. i have just done a fresh (windows) install and this exact problem is happening to me. I am importing a 4 minute MP3 but only shows up as one second and plays a garbled noise for that 1 second. Any suggestions?

Audacity 1.2.6 only supports a few file types, MP4 and WMA are not supported.
Audacity 1.3.12 supports a much greater range of files if you also install FFmpeg.
http://audacityteam.org/download/
http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... tallffmpeg

If that does not work you will need to find a third party format converter for your filles.
