Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Recording interruptions

Post by EduardoBC » Thu Jan 27, 2011 12:20 am

Hello, Greetings from Colombia.

I need your help!! When I play a vinyl record to convert to Digital using the Bhering UF0202 device, I listen to the song through the device and my PC speakers. It plays fine. Then when I play the digitalized song using Audacity or other listening software like Media Player Classic, Windows Media Player or any other, some parts of the song skip just like if the record was srcatched and a groove was jumping. Other times a very very short music interruption is heard. What is wong? In order to get a really top analogue to digital transfer, sometimes I have to record and listen to the digitalized song up to 6 times before I can get a transfer with no jumps or skips. I must emphazise that my records are in top shape and they play smoothly from beginning to end. Please help me!! Thanks. My email is [email protected] just in case some of you want to contact me directly.

Your records are in terrific shape, how about your computer? When was the last time you defragmented and error checked your hard drive? Audacity will not run into a highly fragmented drive. How full is your drive? Most production programs demand 10% to 20% free space before they will run properly.

Defrag
-- Right Click Start > Explore > Right Click Local Drive C: > Properties (Used, Remaining)
-- Tools > Error Checking & Defragmentation

Restart Audacity when you get done servicing your computer.

It's also possible that your virus software is getting into the act and causing problems. Try disconnecting your computer from the internet, disable the virus software and try again.

Thank you very much for your information. Three days ago I had a computer crash and I had to reformat my drive completely, re install my Windows XP, all software etc. The problem persists. However, I will defragment the drive as per your suggestion and see what happens. Is it true that for better Audacity performance, I can't work with the computerusing other software such as PhotoShop as it is digilalizing the LPs? As for the antivirus. I will give it a try. Also, my drives are about 50% full so I think the problem is not here. I will follow your suggestions and try again. If I'm not successful, I will contact you.

Why? Computers don't just go up in a ball of flame.

Most of our failures are caused by a fan failing, something overheating and the system shuts down. You have an electronic celebrity.

Yes - digital audio capture has to be done in real time, so running other processes can cause interrupts. I find that even just trying to run email can sometimes cause glitches in the recording. And remember that Photoshop is also a very resource-hungry application.

Hello, Thanks for your help. Things did improve a lot and it seems that I'm going to leave the PC alone each time I digitalize an LP.
Another question that perhaps you can respond: I have a LaserDisc player and about 50 LaserDisc albums that I would like to burn to DVDs. I suppose the UFO202 cannot be used for video so how can I copy my albums to DVD? I mean the entire information, both audio and video. Is there a similar apparatus that can be used for this? Your help is appreciated. Thanks.

Eduardo,

I bought a device called the Pinnacle Video Transfer when I neded to transfer my old VHS tapes and some programmes I had archived on the hard-drive of ny PVR. It connects to the RCA outputs from these devices (or composite s-video) - it also came with a short Scart to 3xRCA lead.

It outputs an MPEG-4 H.264 file via USB direct to a USB disk orstick (not supplied). I use an 8gig thumb drive, good enough for ~6 hours recording at the "Best" quality. No PC is involved in the capture (thus freeing up your PC at this stage). I then trabsfer the video file to my PC and edit it with Nero-9 and then use Nero to burn the DVD.

If you do get one of these the best advice I can give you (not in their manual!) is to rcord just one item at a time and after the transfer to the PC fully reformat the USB device to "clean" it for the next capture.
