Mixer toolbar

Hey,
I know this is a basic problem that a lot of people have but the wiki page doesn't give me the information that I need. My mixer toolbar is blanked out where I should be able to choose the input source. I really need it and it is driving me insane. Any ideas from anybody? The wiki ariticle doesn't correspond to my system. I'm running windows xp and i have the realtek hd but the wiki article doesn't correspond to what I am viewing on my computer....help me please
