I was recording at church, when at the end of the sermon, instead of stopping the recording I unplugged the mic input. I immediately plugged the mic back in and tried to save the file. I could not do anything, everything was grayed out. I looked in the data file, and the files were there so I closed Audacity out. When I reopened Audacity the data emptied out of the data files folder. I tried to reopen Audacity, but when it opened the recording was blank. It appears that I have lost the recording!!!!! If anyone can help me find it I would greatly appreciate it. I am recording onto a Satellite Toshiba, OS is Vista and sound card is RealTek. I have searched the Audacity _1_2_temp folder and the folder is empty.
Thanks

Re: Lost Recording - Help
Most people write that their computer crashed during a performance and they want to rescue thousands of little AU files in the _DATA folder. In other words, they have no show, but it looks like they should have--or could have if they played their cards right.
They shouldn't, couldn't, and can't.
You have an odd case. You actually managed to crash an Audacity capture without crashing Audacity. You did press STOP after you put the microphone back in, right? I don't know why Windows or Audacity should care a fig whether you have the microphone plugged in or not. Is the microphone connection a multi-purpose socket? If it tried to shift configuration when you pulled the plug, that would do it.
Like does the machine have a built-in microphone? Windows would try to shift to the built-in if you pulled the external one out.
Blammo.
When you closed Audacity in an orderly manner without exporting or saving, you kissed off your show. Audacity goes around and does trash collection.
Don't unplug the microphone at the wrong time any more.
