scrambled project file
I had a last minute request to record the final performance of a theatre show. No time to check equipment. Just throw it together and go. Used a laptop running XP and Audacity 1:2:6 with a USB microphone. Worked fine for about 30mins then Audacity repeatedly crashed. I had to reinstall Audacity and reboot Windows several times to get through. I am now left with a project file of 34.2kb and a data folder of 229mb. Although I have all the data files I can only play back approx 15secs of audio in Audacity. How can I restore the project?

You ran out of hard drive, right? Or you tried to capture into a highly fragmented hard drive? Or both?
You should be in Audacity 1.3.12 for any new work. Audacity 1.2 is hopelessly out of date and no longer supported, updated or patched.
Audacity 1.3.12 has much improved Disaster Recovery over 1.2. If you were doing all this in 1.2.6, then I'd be surprised if you got any show at all.
