Volume very low when recording over microphone

After reading all the forums I can find, I still can not increase the recording volume. When playing back I have to turn the volume up all the way but I still can hardly hear. I am using Audacity 1.2.6 with RealTek High Def. audio sound driver and Vista OS. I have searched for driver updates, insured that RealTek was chosen and not a Microsoft audio device and insured that the input volume was maxed out. I have noticed that when increasing and decreasing the input volume, nothing seems to change. Your help is resolving this issue whould be greatly appreciated.

Is it a condenser or more expensive dynamic microphone? Then its output needs amplifying by connecting it to a pre-amplifier or mixer. If it's a cheap dynamic mic, look for a "volume boost" or "AGC" in the recording volume controls in the Windows Control Panel.

After reviewing 'microphone boost' I found that I could increase the db from 0 to 20 to 40. It was set from the factory at 20db. After increasing to 40db, the hissing during playback was terrible. Thanks for the input.

We can't say much can we without details of the microphone? Microphones are definitely a case where you get what you pay for... Have you looked in the mic instructions as to how it is to be connected to the computer? If it doesn't have any, that tells its own story.

I haven't purchased a new mic yet, but I feel that you are correct. The mic that I have attempted to use is about 20 years old.
