Audiacity 1.2.6 error while recording ... cant open temp fil

Post by mario62 » Sun Jan 09, 2011 9:16 pm

Hello,

i got my audacity 1.2.6 CD with my new LENCO L-3866USB turntable.
i installed it, configured it and recorded side 1 of an LP.
pressed STOP.
turned the LP.
restarted recording, now the 2nd side.
Audacity again started recorded, with a new "Tonspur" (AudioTrack).

And suddenty Audacity starts reporting errors (the same error over and over again, about 10 times per second, nearly no chance to cancel anything)
can't open file "C:UsersadminAppDataLocalTempaudacity_1_2_tempb00590.aub00710.au (error 3 : The System cannot find the specified path) Date,Time...
....
....

ok, the system definitly will not be able to find this path. using cmd.exe shows:

Verzeichnis von C:UsersadminAppDataLocalTempaudacity_1_2_temp

09.01.2011 20:34 <DIR> .
09.01.2011 20:34 <DIR> ..
09.01.2011 20:03 1.060.956 b00000.au
09.01.2011 20:03 1.060.956 b00001.au
09.01.2011 20:03 1.060.956 b00002.au
....
09.01.2011 20:34 1.060.956 b00589.au
09.01.2011 20:34 1.060.956 b00590.au
09.01.2011 20:34 1.060.956 b00591.au
592 Datei(en), 627.569.856 Bytes
2 Verzeichnis(se), 62.740.803.584 Bytes frei

Now i cannot do anything with the recorded tracks. (e.q. using |<< sets the cursor to the begin of the data, press PLAY (green triangle) has no effect....

using >>| gives ...
can't open file "C:UsersadminAppDataLocalTempaudacity_1_2_tempb00590.aub00717.au

(note : the last file name changed! from b00710 to now b00717. this increases with every try).

a) what does this error mean (not from the system level, but from the user level - what should i do to avoid this error?)
b) what is the expected way of using your software to record a LP?
Is there a an introduction (a cook book) somewhere? where? : how to burn your first LP to a CD?
Some keytechniques. (Definitly i want a single track per song at the CD.

Thanks for any help.

best regards,
mario semo

The first thing that I'd recommend is upgrading to Audacity 1.3.12.
The 1.2.6 version is now very old and is no longer being developed or supported by the developers. Don't be put off by the "beta" label, it is a very mature beta and very close to becoming the new Audacity 2.0

How big is your C: drive and how much free space is on it?
Working with audio requires a lot of free, defragmented disk space.

There are a number of tutorials available (mostly for the 1.3.x version) See the links at the top of the page or directly below this post.

Hello,

> How big is your C: drive and how much free space is on it?
>>592 Datei(en), 627.569.856 Bytes
>> 2 Verzeichnis(se), 62.740.803.584 Bytes frei

so, the current (only one) recording takes 627MB, and there are 62GB free space.

A bit confusing is the name of the file which cannot be opened:

....b00590.aub00710.au

But, b00590.au is a FILE and not a directory!

>>09.01.2011 20:34 1.060.956 b00590.au

Maybe (just an idea) the problem is related to the fact that side 2 is longer (time) than side 1.
so, i see 2 tracks in audacity:
track1 : xxxxxxxxxx
track2 : yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Or it is related to the size of 627MB.

i will download this newer version, but i am confused since i bought a product which ships with this software.

thx, mario

AC 1.3 with Lenco turntable + stereo rec

Post by mario62 » Tue Jan 11, 2011 9:36 pm

Hello,

i was told to upgrade from Audacity 1.2.6 which was shipped with my lenco turntable to 1.3.12
With 1.2.6 i got some errors while recording regarding file audacity cannot open (see "Audiacity 1.2.6 error while recording ... cant open temp fil")
ok,

i downloaded and installed 1.3.12 and connected my turntable.

i opened Audacity 1.3.12 and settings.

i select devices and input device = microphone USB ....

now i want to select 2 channels stereo, but this is not more available :-(

ok, i retried 1.2.6 : i can select microphone usb... with 2 channels stereo and while recording i see 2 channels recording (L and R).
i retrired 1.3.12 and i still can only select 1... MONO for the USB input device. and while recording i just see input on 1 channel.

:-(

so, how to use my LENCO turntable with Audacity 1.3.x with STEREO recording.

The quickstart (config) of Audacity 1.2.6 with my Lenco turntable can be found here : http://www.lenco.de/attachments/004_L-3866_qg_ENG.pdf

with 1.3.12 i cannot select USB Microphone input device with 2 channels (stereo) anymore. i can just select device=usb microphone.... and channels=1 (mono).

any ideas?

thx,

Note : the 1.3.12 manual http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Reco ... turntables
i can read :

Set up Audacity to record from the turntable
Connect the USB cable of the turntable to the computer, then launch Audacity (restart Audacity if it was already running when you connected the cable). Go to the Devices tab of Preferences and:
* In the "Recording" section, select the USB device from the "Device" menu. Set the "Channels" menu to "2 (stereo)".

And this is what does not work. After selecting the USB device for recording, i can only select 1(mono) for channels.

So, what can be wrong with my config?

regards,
mario

USB microphone? I thought you were using a turntable, or does Windows call the turntable a "USB microphone"?

yes, i am talking about the Lenco turntable. But the only USB driver in the list is this Microphone Driver.
The name of the driver is the same in 1.2.6 and in 1.3.12 (MICROPHONE (usb audio codec)),
the difference is just, that i can select 2 (stereo) for channels in 1.2.6, but this option is not available in 1.3.12.

but i found a note regarding Windows Vista somewhere ...

Question:Vista Driver
Answer:To let the turntablebe recognized by Microsoft Windows you sometimes need to install an extradriver. This driver can be download at the following location

And the Laptop which i use for turntable recording has VISTA installed. so i will try this.

Hopefully you'll get this message before you do.

There's something else to check first.

If Vista thinks it is a microphone then it will probably set recording to mono.
Audacity 1.3.12 should respond to this by only allowing the recording preferences to be set to "1 channel (mono)".

Close Audacity.
Open the Windows Control Panel.
Go to the "Sounds" section.
Go to the "Recording" tab

(this next bit you may need to look for as I'm not on a Windows machine at the moment)
I think you then need to right click on the "USB microphone" device and select "Properties",
then click on "Advanced".

Somewhere round there is a setting for the recording properties which includes the "Quality" (set it to "44100 Hz 16 bit CD Quality")
and the number of channels (set that to "stereo").

Then start Audacity and go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and you should now be able to select "2 channels (stereo)".
Then go to the "Quality" tab and ensure that the default sample rate is set to 44100.

The Lenco should not show up as a microphone in the devices list. It should appear as "USB Audio Codec" as shown in the Lenco document.

Do you have a USB microphone connected as well as the Lenco? if so, unplug it and try again.
