On Windows Vista-Mixer toolbar Grey. Help.

I just downloaded Audacity on my other computer, which has windows vista, I've used Audacity before on the other computer but the Mixer Toolbar is grey on this computer. People keep telling me to go to the Prefrances and to change the Recording Device, but it only gives me two choices and neither of them are the one that I need to select. Please help.
