Pops, clicks, dropouts

Post by deer of the dawn » Wed Jun 25, 2008 8:17 am

My Toshiba Satellite (P4, XP SP2 etc) served me faithfully for 2 years in the US using Music Creator. Just before moving to Africa I decided it would be a good idea to update to Music Creator 3 (which would add VST compatibility). Big mistake, nothing but problems. :?

Recently I downloaded Audacity. I really like it, but I still have problems with popping, clicking, and dropouts ("skips" in recording, not silent periods).

I suspect that too many system resources are being wasted on nonessential background processes. Btw I use an M-Audio mobile pre-usb to input an MXL 990 condenser mic. I started my compy in safe mode and listed the essential processes. I plan to try starting in safe mode but I suspect that the usb pre-amp may not work in that mode. If not, then I will start normally and go through and stop nonessential processes, but I know that is risky too. That's my next step, unless someone can give me better advice?

Thanks a ton! :D

I would try moving to 1.3.5 which although billed as Beta is actually fairly stabel now. 1.2 is ancient and has many bugs that have not been fixed.

In terms of non-essential processes: try disconnecting from the internet and any network that you have, switch off virus checking, make sure you have no auto-upfdate [programms running/scheduled.

Don't forget to turn on your anti-virus software prior to reconnecting to t'interweb.

(PS: some people find that just setting their anti-virus s/w to ignore .aup and .au files is a simple fix for similar problems to yours)

Thank you Wax, I will try 1.3.5.

I did have AV shut off. I don't have internet at home (I live in Africa :) ) so that's not a prob. And I've tried to shut off all non-essential printer software, media player crap, all this stuff that thinks it has to have an active process running even if you only use it once a month.
