Audio from mpg?

I am trying to grab a few seconds of audio from an mpg file.
My first attempts opening an mpg video file in Audacity came out all screechy. I've tried open and import raw.
Audacity tells me it doesn't recognize the file type.

How can I extract a few seconds of audio from a video file?

First, upgrade to Audacity 1.3.12, which you can get from here: http://audacityteam.org/download
(this won't work in version 1.2)

Next install the ffMpeg library, which allows Audacity to import a large range of audio and video files. The instructions for downloading and installing it are here:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... tallffmpeg

Now when you import the mpeg, Audacity should recognise the audio.
