The item microphone can not be selected

I just got this recordplayer ,and try to install it,but i can't select microphone.Don't get any sound out of it trough the computer.I do can record the records and change them to a wave file.I'm not so good in computerstuff,but in the beginning,there was no sound possible from wherever on the computer.When I starte up the first time ,it says that it was not working under DOS.It took over al the soundcard.Hope somebody understand this and can help me.Thanks

From your patchy description of the setup I would infer that you are using a USB turntable, right? In fact I would further infer that you are using an ION/Numark TT - the manuals have been in error for over two years now....
If so then you should not expect to be able to select the input - Audaciity knows that when you plug is a USB device that there is only one calid input path - and so disables the input choices. (Evidenced as correct as you say you can record ok).
The reason why you can't hear anything is because when you plug in the USB device it takes over the sound outpu as well as the imput - and the TT is obviously not an output device. What you need to do is to tell Audacity via Preferences and Windows via the Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices Audio tab that you sound output should be targetted on your PCs onboard soundcard. You may need to staop and restart Audacity for the change to take effect.
