Audacity 1.2.6 Hangs On Launch

I can no longer launch Audacity 1.2.6.

I installed the program on my Win XP Pro desktop computer. The program has been working great for many months. Something has gone bad which I cannot find. When I clicking the application icon to run Audacity, the program proceeded to hangs up, that is, the main program window appears but only the menu bar displays; there is no text anywhere else in the open window. Moreover, the windows "hourglass" appears signifying the fact that the program is busy. I looked in the Taskbar Manager and it showed that the program was "running" but the Task Manager process window shows that it is using over 50% of the CPU time. I can only end the program by means of the Task manager End Process function.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program several times to no avail. I have even edited the Windows Registry to remove all instances of "Audacity" and deleted the Audacity directory and all it's subdirectories. Since I previously ran the sane version of Audacity I can't understand the problems I'm now encountering.

I checked all the forums and found one posting by user "Zenbiker" posted on Nov 20, 2007 but haven't found any reply postings.

Can anyone suggest a how to fix this problem?

I would give 1.3.5 a try - the Beta version is now fairly stable and very usable.
