Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

exporting wav files incorrectly?

Post by rea1high » Sat Jun 21, 2008 3:46 pm

I've been using Audacity for a few weeks now, with very few problems.
However, a soundclip that i exported today can't be opened properly by two programs.
"Sound Recorder" (a basic recorder in Win XP), will play the file, but won't show the wave form anymore (indicating a problem), the other program won't import the file at all anymore.
The only change to my pc between Audacity working and the problem occuring has been a windows auto update.

Any ideas anyone?

Update - I've tried impoting the Audacity Wav file into Windows Movie Maker to see if i could get it to work in there and i got the following error message:

"The file E:testfile.wav cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

You didn't say in words exactly what you were trying to export as, but can we assume WAV? I would be digging in my Audacity Preferences to see which kind of WAV file I was exporting. Not every program supports 44100 at 32-bit floating and those are Audacity's defaults. I would change to 44100 16 bit and see if the WAV files are acceptable to everybody.

If you not trying to Export a WAV file then what? As a test I would try to export a WAV file just to see if it worked.

And just to close the usual gap. Exporting and Saving in Audacity are very different. 'Save' produces a sound management environment, not a sound file. Only 'Export' gives you a sound file.

Thanks for the response and sorry, you're right, i didn't say. it's wav file im exporting.
it's been working fine, but now, it exports and plays in audacity, but not in other programs, programs that it used to.
i'll try adjusting the settings, as maybe they've been accidentally changed.

EDIT - adjusted settings and it seems to be working properly again.
Thanks for your help.
