SW,

You may be getting confused between the Save and the Export functions - this catches a lot of people out - and has provoked much comment on earlier postings.

When you are working on Audacity project you can Save the project to an Audacity project - this is a complex file structure usable only by Audacity and is optimised for speed of processing on recording and editing. This file format/structure cannot be used by other music software, nor can it be loaded onto MP3 players, iPods etc.

Once you have finished the recording and editing of a particular project you can the Export the project to a usable music file, or set of music files. Typical export formats are MP3 (compressed but lossy). WAV (lossless but big) and other less common formats like OGG and FLAC.

A WAV file or MP3 file is what you need for playing on your portable player, sending to your mum so she can hear it.

BTW to export a set of MP3/WAVfiles brolken up into tracks like an LP or CD - just insert labels at track breaks (use CTRL+B) and don't forget to put one right at the beginning for the first track. Then use Audacity's Export Multiple function.
