Reduce noise in mpg file.

Post by SysTechGuy » Wed Jun 11, 2008 2:37 pm

Let me apologize in advance. I am a newb to both audacity and sound editing.

I need to do a basic edit to some mpg movie files and I have accomplished most of what I set out to do by reading the manual and posted forums, but now I am somewhat stuck and need a final nudge in the right direction.

Someone at the office taped some movie clips that will soone be edited and posted on YouTube and saved them as mpg files on a computer (WinXP). One of the clips has a loud background hum.

We have Windows Movie Maker software on the Desktops, so in order to use it to create a movie, I had to convert the mpg files to wmv format. This seemed to work.

I wasn't able to import the wmv file that had a loud background hum into audacity, but when I converted the original mpg file to wav, I was able to import to audacity and eliminate the hum.

Now, I need to get the edited sound back to the wmv format with the movie so I can edit it with Windows Movie Maker.

Can anyone give me some general guidance in this matter?

To cut the question short - you need to convert from wav to wma/wmv ?

Try "Super" from "erightsoft".

Since I originally posted the question, I have found out that I may need additional software to do a remux / demux of the video. To recap:

I converted the mpg file to wmv so Windows Movie Maker will play nice with it. Then I need to demux the video to edit the audio track of the specified clip with audacity, then remux it back to wmv so we can do further edits using Windows Movie Maker.

Question is, what freeware will allow me to "easily" seperate the audio and video of the wmv file and then remux back to a wmv file?

Windows Movie Maker should be able to import WAV files.
If it only supports importing WMA and not WAV, then use SUPER to convert from WAV to WMA (but I don't think it is very likely that you will need to do this).

Yes, Windows Movie Maker can import wav files. But I need the audio as well as the video.

From what I have read, I need to demultiplex the wmv or mpg file, edit the audio portion of the file, then remultiplex the audio with the video.

Can audacity do this? I have gone through the manual and I do not think that it can.

No, I don't think it can either. Audacity can do all the audio editing stuff, but you need a video program for that part.
For Windows Movie Maker - maybe you can find something from their Newsgroups? http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/usin ... fault.mspx

Hi,

You can try importing your movie into Movie Maker, drag your file to the timeline, click on clip/audio and select mute, then import your edited wav file, drag it to the timeline and see if it plays. Then save as a movie.I tried this and replaced the soundtrack with an entirely different one. Hopes this helps.
