Input Volume

When I record, my input volume is very low, even though I have the input volume slider all the way up. When I play back, I can barely hear what I recorded - and I am strumming an acoustic guitar pretty aggressively and singing. I am using an audio-technica ATR 20 mic that I bought for maybe $30 several years ago plugged into the mic input on the front of my Gateway 838GM. Any suggestions for how I can increase input volume would be appreciated. Thanks~

John

You'll need to go into the Dreaded Windows Sound Control Panels. For a microphone like that, some sound systems have a "20 dB Boost" switch for the microphone channel. That switch wouldn't be available in Audacity.

Audacity is a complete slave to whatever Windows/Mac/Linux does to the sound ahead of time.

Here's a little piece from the wiki. It was written for recording internet audio, but you might get some tips.
