Gale,
I'm an XP user, not a Vista user. I also occasionally use UbuntuStudio, but I have been reluctant to switch over permanently so far. The only place I've used Vista is on my girlfriend's laptop, I have no experience doing audio work under Vista.
I agree with you two about possible interference from bigwigs regarding the Stereo Mix option. It just seems like it would be so trivial to add to the drivers that it would be stupid not to include it. Maybe one day we'll get JACK working in Windows and we won't have to worry about drivers anymore. I've found JACK to be fantastic when using Linux, but Audacity doesn't support it. That's one of the few things keeping me from switching over more permanently.

Audacity is working perfectly with Jack on my machine (Xubuntu 8.04) until I try to run another audio application at the same time - then it crashes horribly. I generally use Audacity with Jack because the performance is great (more channels simultaneously without glitches on my low spec machine, and very stable) - I just have to remember not to open other audio applications at the same time. I am so looking forward to Audacity running properly with Jack.

Steve,
I used to be in the same boat with JACK. It worked like that under UbuntuStudio 7.04, but I recently upgraded to 8.04 and Audacity no longer shows up as a viable input/output in the list of JACK programs.
I use a program called Portage that analyzes all the available JACK i/o and allows you to easily route any output to any input. Hardware shows up the same as software in the program, so it's very easy to route things internally between programs (say, a softsynth -> Ardour) and then have them come out of the speakers all in real-time. But Audacity never shows up in Portage so I can't route audio to/from it anymore.

With the drivers I currently have, I can select each stereo pair of inputs (1+2, 3+4, etc) individually and record in stereo, or I can select "Multi" and record up to 8 at once. It's very, very convenient for me since I don't have to swap inputs in and out all the time and I can record several instruments at once if the situation allows it.
Hi Andy
We've just made a change in development code so that if the user's hardware only supports two channels (as detected), they will only be offered mono and stereo in the recording channels dropdown rather than up to 16 channels (avoids all those people trying four channels > "error opening sound device"). Would you (or any one else who can record multi-channel into Audacity) mind giving this a whirl for us to see we have not broken anything:
