I just installed Audacity on a Dell Dimension 4600 running XP Pro SP2. When I try to run Audacity I get the "audacity.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." dialog. The Windows application log contains the following error. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times. Audacity works perfectly on my Dell laptop running XP Pro SP2.
Faulting application audacity.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module audacity.exe, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0000b7ec.
Any suggestions? Thanks

Re: Audacity will not run
I am installing Audacity 1.26 on XP Pro SP2 so the article about Vista does not seem to apply. Am I missing something? Thanks.
Re: Audacity will not run
Never mind. I see what the problem is. Now all I have to do is figure out how to fix it. Thanks again.
Re: Audacity will not run
No, sorry, my mistake, I misread it (just been looking at a whole load of Vista problems).
Reinstalling will probably not do much unless you also remove the registry entries at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareAudacity
If you don't feel confident about editing the registry, you could try Audacity 1.3 (it does not use the Windows Registry)

Re: Audacity will not run
I have discovered that the problem has nothing to do with Audacity. The built-in sound card in this system shows as working correctly in Device Manager but when I go into Control Panel | Sounds & Audio Devices it is not listed in any of the drop-downs on the Audio tab. I am sure once I get that fixed Audacity will run.
