Need to combine voice over with a music track

Hello, I am familiar with basic editing functions. In my example, I need to start my selection with music, then lower the volume of the music as my voice over starts all the while keeping the background music lower so as not to drown out the voice over. When the voice over portion is completed, I want to fade the music up to the original volume level. I do not want to use the fade in and fade out edits since these will fade the music out completely. I need to just lower the level of the music when the voice over begins. Can anyone assist or guide me as to what functions I can use to achieve this effect.

Thanks,
G-man

Search the Help Contents in Audacity for "Envelope Editing."
Just make sure to place your first and last marks at 1.0 to keep the rest of your track at the orig. volume.

I haven't used the effect, but Audacity 1.3.4 introduced "Auto Duck" which automatically creates the desired volume dips you're looking for. It removes the need for manually editing volume envelopes.

Both of these solutions will do the job. "Auto Duck" can be a bit tricky to set up, but once you have found (by experimentation) the correct settings, it works very well for voice-overs and automates the whole process.
