Recording Problem

first of all im gonna let you all know im running on vista, ok heres me problem, when i click record it says "error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate." first off i have no idea what this means, so can someone help me out. also when i go into prefrences to select a recording device from prefrences the drop down mennu is blank, not greyed out but blank.

i couldn't find the answer there, should i try downloading the beta version and using that instead?

You can certainly try Audacity 1.3.5 beta - it's OK to have both on your machine at the same time (but you can not run them simultaneously).

You have checked that your audio device is correctly enabled in the Windows control panel haven't you.
