one channel replaced by buzzing

Post by jimwulff » Mon Jun 02, 2008 4:38 am

I am recording an album in stereo from an Ion turntable. I just had a recurrence of a frustrating problem I've had on other occasions: one of the stereo channels goes out, replaced by a buzzing noise.

When I recorded side one, everything was fine - music on both stereo channels. My settings have not changed. Under Preferences:Audio I/O, my settings were 2 channels with USB Audio Codec as the recording device. All I recall doing was saving the tracks after recording, labeling them, and exporting as multiple. After importing the songs to ITunes, I went back into Audacity and that is when the trouble began.

My computer is Windows XP 2002, Service Pack 2. Under the control panel sounds, I also have the recording device set as USB Audio Codec.

It's most likely to be a fault in the ION catridge/wiring/electronics/USB services.

If you have a hi-fi or a boombox, you can test the deck by using the RCA outputs plugged in to the amp - do you get the buzzing on one channel on the hifi/boom-box?

You are making sure BTW that the RCA plugs are not shorting together - this is important.

Is this the turntable where you have to plug in the cartridge and needle? Try unplugging it (carefully) and plug it back in again. We've had a couple of cases where the electrical connections didn't go right the first time.
