stereo mix selection??

I've been using the free version of audacity and everythihg was great, then suddenly, it doesn't allow me to choose the "stereo mix" selection from yjr input pull down -- now I don't know how to get it to record again -- the pull down onlly offers mic -- line in and ??another one?? -- but no stereo mix -- can anyone suggest?
